Austin F Schmidt began his education in the craft of cinematography at New York University Tisch Film School. He continued to study at FAMU in Prague and later at AFI in Los Angeles.


Through the years he has shot over 50 features, shorts, music videos and commercials. A film titled “2081” was an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” which featured James Cosmo of “Braveheart” and “Troy” along with Julie Hagerty of “Airplane.” His first endeavor with the RED camera was a film titled “Mystery Team” which screened at Sundance and was picked up by Roadside Attractions for theatrical release in the fall of ‘09.  He has recently completed two films in New York. The first being “Trophy Kids” starring David Gallagher of “7th Heaven”, Ryan Eggold of “90210”, and Tahyna Tozzi of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” The second film “Petunia” is starring Thora Birch of “American Beauty”, Brittany Snow of “Hairspray”, Eddie Kaye Thomas of “American Pie”, and Michael Urie of “Ugly Betty”.


Schmidt stays active in educating the younger cinematography community; teaching lighting and camera workshops at the Universal Stages in Los Angeles, He also published a book for cinematography students which is being distributed to film schools across the country.


Currently, Schmidt operates bi-coastal out of Los Angeles and Manhattan. He can provide clients with his 35mm Moviecam camera package.
