Austin F Schmidt first began his education as a fine arts major at Point Loma University in San Diego. There he became familiar with artistic composition and detail, which naturally applied to his future as a cinematographer. Years later he begin his education in the craft of cinematography at New York University Tisch Film School. He continued to study at FAMU in Prague and later at AFI in Los Angeles.
In Manhattan, Schmidt formed AFS Productions, a cinematography and camera operating service that provides clients with a 35mm Moviecam camera package. During down-time, he has taught camera and lighting classes at the New York Film Academy.
Through the years he has shot over 50 features, music videos and commercials. A recent film titled “2081” was an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” which featured James Cosmo of “Braveheart” and “Troy” along with Julie Hagerty of “Airplane.” His first endeavor with the RED camera was a film titled “Mystery Team” which screened at Sundance and was picked up by Roadside Attractions for theatrical release in the fall of ‘09. The feature “Dumping Grounds” was done in association with the producers at Code Entertainment, known for “Palmetto, Noel, and Drowning Mona.” His latest venture was the feature “Trophy Kids” starring David Gallagher of “7th Heaven”, Ryan Eggold of “90210”, and Tahyna Tozzi of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
Currently, Schmidt operates as a bi-coastal cinematographer out of Los Angeles and Manhattan and is represented by Prolific.
